Noticia personal: un terremoto de 7,1 en Caracas

A 7.1 earthquake struck Venezuela this evening. Buildings have come down in Altamira and Los Palos Grandes, the Caracas neighborhoods where my family and friends live. I have spent my life reporting on this country from the outside and loving it from the inside, and tonight those two things are the same thing.

I have stood in the rubble of a quake this size before, in Mexico City. I know what the next hours hold. They are slow, and they are merciless, and they decide who is pulled out alive. Right now crews are digging in the dark, the power is out across parts of the country, and no one yet knows the full toll.

I am not asking the world for sympathy. I am asking for attention, because attention is what moves supplies, rescue teams, and the people who know how to find a heartbeat under concrete. In a moment this fragile for Venezuela, that pressure matters more, not less.

To my family, my friends, and everyone tonight counting heads and waiting for a phone to ring: you are not alone, and we are not looking away.
