Functional Neuronal Information and Bioenergetics: The Battery Analogy
By Carlos J. Pérez Pulido · ISHEA Institute ·
A neuron works like a battery: fully charged it processes signals accurately, depleted it distorts them. The piece uses that analogy to link cellular energy to the quality of thought.

🧠 Functional Neuronal Information & Bioenergetics: The Battery Analogy
Imagine a neuron as a battery:
Fully charged → it can process information accurately.
Low charge → the same signal that normally conveys learning can cause damage.
In our ISHEA in silico simulations, we see exactly this:
⚡ Na⁺ and K⁺ provide the energetic substrate (the “battery power”),
🔹 Ca²⁺ carries the actual functional information, activating CaMKII to encode plasticity.
Results:
Healthy neurons generate plastic information under stimulation.
Energy-depleted neurons experience excitotoxic collapse even under the same signal.
Stress can propagate in small networks, mimicking early neurodegenerative processes.
💡 Takeaway: Functional neuronal information depends on energy availability, linking bioelectricity, metabolism, and neuronal health.
*“Unlike classical models that treat ions as mere conductors, ISHEA distinguishes energy from information.”*
This framework is fully reproducible with public data, offering predictive insights into neuronal function and degeneration.

Threat or opportunity? Artificial intelligence and our creative capacity
Responding to Pope Leo XIV’s call to “disarm AI”, this piece argues that the risk lies not in the technology but in the human system using it: well designed, AI can free up creative capacity.
