🧠⚡ THE NOBEL, OPTOGENETICS — AND A QUESTION I WANT TO TEST
Today, Stanford announced that Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries leading to optogenetics.
What caught my attention is not only the technology.
It is the underlying principle.
A signal can become action when it is coupled to an energetic biological system.
Optogenetics made this experimentally visible in neuroscience: light-sensitive proteins can translate light into changes in neuronal activity, allowing researchers to perturb specific cells and circuits and observe the consequences.
This brings me back to a question I have been pursuing through the ISHEA framework:
What happens when information becomes intention?
My working definition is simple:
INTENTION = INFORMATION MADE ACTION.
Not information merely stored.
Not information merely observed.
Information that actually changes the state of a system through directed action.
This leads to a deeper question:
Can the coupling between energy and guidance be measured?
In simplified form:
ENERGY × GUIDANCE → DIRECTED ACTION → STATE CHANGE
The critical concept is coupling.
Energy alone does not explain directed action.
Information alone does not necessarily produce action.
Something connects the two.
My hypothesis is that this coupling may be investigated through measurable relationships between:
E — Energy
I — Information / Guidance
F — Friction or resistance
ΔS — Change of system state
This is not a claim that the Nobel proves ISHEA.
It does not.
Rather, it reinforces why I believe the question deserves experimental investigation.
The objective should not be to confirm the equation.
It should be to try to falsify it.
If information can be converted into directed action under measurable energetic conditions, perhaps we can begin to quantify something usually treated as abstract:
the energetic cost of turning information into action.
That is the question I want to pursue.
Not because the idea is elegant.
But because nature gets the final vote.
